Notes: Almost home, we stopped to enjoy the view. |
|
On the John F Kennedy Memorial Highway outside of Trinidad, Colorado with a beautiful view of Fishers Peak.
As we said so-long to the Royal Gorge and started making our way east to the interstate to turn south toward New Mexico, our last full day before finishing our six-week road trip that included 35 states, 1 territory (Washington DC) and 1 province (Ontario), we decided to do one more cache. We were tired and ready to be home but we wanted this one to be special in some way as it would mark our 1500th cache since beginning this game back in April of 2004. Bearfr checked the Geocaching app and found one such cache, Stop & Enjoy the View, in Pueblo West, only slightly off our route. She set it as our destination and we soon found ourselves parked in front of a 12 ft. bronze eagle sculpture. It was part of a memorial to honor all branches of the military services. As ex-Navy myself with a son, a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law in the Navy, a father who served in WWII in the Army, an uncle who served in the Navy at the same time and another uncle who lost his life right at the end of that war, going down with his ship, I found it very appropriate. I thought about that uncle who I never knew as he gave his life for his country four years before I was born. What was so sad is that his death and the death of all those others on board the USS Indianapolis, should not have been. The war was almost over; the world's first atomic bomb had been delivered to the Island of Tinian on July 26, 1945, ironically, by the USS Indianapolis. Four days later as she steamed west to join up with the battle group in preparation for the invasion of Japan, she was hit with two torpedoes. She sank in 12 minutes taking 296 men with her. Of the remaining 900 another 583 lost their lives to injuries, exposure and sharks over the next five days before they were rescued. You can read more about the story of the Indianapolis on the website, .http://www.ussindianapolis.org/story.htm.

#1520 Homage To The Breakfast Gods by ysabet
Hint: O mighty Panicakus who ruleth the fearful realms of Ihop and Wafflehaus--
O Crunch, captain of the mysterious depths of the sea--
O great Grits Goddess, without whose cheesy, buttery glory we would be less rotund--
O all-seeing, all-knowing Coffye, caretaker of the Infinite and waker of us all--
We extol your glory and ask that Saint Jemima may intercede in our behalf!
Let us not go hungry as we toil forth in our 9-to-5 workaday world,
But nourish us in our hour of need!
